Twenty- Two Years in the Television Production Business

Michael W. Tivey

  • When searching for a qualified T.V. production engineer for your upcoming programs, hearing from one who has worked with producers from Digital Equipment Corporation on instructional tapes, teleconferences and promotional videos may not turn your head. But, hearing from a camera and sound engineer who has also worked on commercials for President George Bush, variety and talk shows for The Monitor Channel, and who has run camera for concerts, including the Boston Pops (Evening at Pops, WGBH-TV 1997-99) , traveled to the Olympic Games to provide audio coverage (Nagano, Japan - CBS Winter Games 1998) and camera operation (Sydney, Australia - SOBO Summer Games 2000), and who has also run slo-mo tape for professional sports teams, including the Boston Celtics, Bruins, Red Sox, and college sports, and who will bring a wealth of experience to your next video production...Now that is a rare find.

  • Even more rare is an engineer whose abilities originated in the highly creative and resourceful environment of Public Television, and grew in the exceptional diversity of independent production houses and continues to be honed in the business domain, running his own broadcast video company. I have those experiences and abilities. While working at NHPTV- Durham, NH for many years and freelancing for WGBH-TV Boston, MA since 1987 and currently having accepted a full-time position there, I have developed and still maintain the highest level of quality and precision in my work. My experiences include, but are not limited to, the list you see here.

  • My involvement with other clients includes running camera for Celtics and Bruins games, recording sound for ENG, EFP and studio productions coast-to-coast, and covering presidential campaigns, including the Democratic Presidential Debates aired on PBS, as well as the New Hamphire Primary victory of President Bill Clinton in 1992 for Arkansas Public Television. Also, most recently I have been providing field production support to many industrial and commercial programs through freelance producers nationwide.

  • The two most recent productions of international reknowned were the Premier Winter Goodwill Games in Lake Placid, New York in February, 2000, with partial responsibility for audio assistance for Figure Skating, and in the late Summer, 2000, covering baseball for the Sydney Olympic Broadcast Organization at the Sydney, Australia Olympic Games, where I ran camera.

  • My current position is as a full-time Master Control and Tape Floor Engineer at WGBH-TV PBS Channel 2 in Boston, Mass. I have been associated with the largest producer of Public Television Programs in the U.S. since June 1987 as a freelance engineer. I am now working there at the critical juncture in the evolution of the station and all television stations, as they go on-line with fully digital broadcast facilities. WGBH is working and evolving it's operation almost daily, and I am very proud to be part of their Broadcast Operations Unit.
